Counselor's Corner

High School Guidance Counselor

Welcome to the TLCA San Angelo High School "Counselor's Corner!" If you have landed on this page and are taking a look around, chances are that you are either a High School student or a parent of a student.

If you are a student, we invite you to reach out to your High School office at any time. Let us know if you have any questions about schedules, your goals, scholarships, college, etc. We are here for you!

If you are a parent, then we want to take the time and first say THANK YOU for the investment you’ve made in TLCA. Thank you for entrusting us with your child through the years. It’s not lost on us what a big deal that is and what an honor to say you are a part of our Eagle family.

If there is something you need that we have not provided below, simply reach out and let us know!

The new graduation requirements mandate that all entering freshman students select an endorsement, in addition to the foundation plan, that will be pursued the duration of their high school career. Talk to your Counselor about which track you should choose.

Get involved!  Colleges and universities like to see students’ records to include not only good grades, but also involvement in volunteer service and UIL activities. Document, document, document.

Continue working on your grades; check your credits to make sure you are on schedule for graduation. Sophomore students are eligible to take the PSAT in October.  Cost is $15.

Volunteer!  Keep documentation of volunteer hours.

  • Grades! Grades! Grades!  Keep tabs on your credits to make sure you are on schedule for graduation.
  • Continue your volunteer time.
  • Register to take the PSAT.
  • Register to take the ASVAB.  (Taking the ASVAB does not commit students to any branch of the military.) This is a good instrument to find out what your strengths are in helping you choose a career or studies to pursue in college.
  • Take the ACT or SAT.
  • Take time in the summer between your junior and senior year to visit colleges you are interested in.
  •

  • Meet with your counselor to review transcript/credits.
  • Select top three college choices.
  • Take the ACT / SAT again if needed.
  • Seniors have two college days.  Use them to make a better informed decision.
  • Stay on top of college application deadlines!
  • Stay on top of scholarship application deadlines!
  • Let counselor know of final college decision.
  • In May, request that a final transcript be sent to the college of your choice.

We know what it's like to be looking forward and trying to figure out what you should be helping your High School student with. There are usually questions about GPA's, College, Financial Planning, and more. You play such a vital role in helping your child succeed and head in the right direction; and so we hope that the part we are able to play is to be here lending a little support and guidance.

So to start, here are a few things to think about:
  • Have I met with the school's guidance counselor?
  • Am I utilizing TLCA's "Parent Portal" to track grades? This is located in "Parent Resources."
  • Has my Sophomore/Junior made a plan for taking the ACT or SAT?
  • Have we begun to look at colleges or trade schools?

Know today that we are in your corner and that we fully believe that a 100% partnership between both parent and the school equals success. We encourage you to reach out, ask questions, and know that we are here.

What is a FAFSA?

It is a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA®) that will assist you with the cost of attending University. This is information used by colleges and universities to determine what type and how much financial aid students are eligible to receive each semester of their college career.

Once the FAFSA information is complete, keep in mind that you will be required to verify and accept the information provided by student and student’s parents/guardians.  Financial aid is NOT automatic.  Students must also verify information with the financial department of the college they intend to attend.

Check with your High School counselor for FAFSA information night.
